<image:title>Musical Sculptures - Broken Strings and Natural Things</image:title>
<image:caption>Broken Strings and Natural Things On display at Prime 93 Restaurant- 4315 Manchester Rd, Akron, OH 44319 A musical instrument's purpose in life is to create art with sound. After a long life of songs and expression, the loving wear and tear of the instrument gives way to an old, worn out guitar whose sound is silenced. Its life as a musical instrument is over, but it can be given new life and new purpose as it becomes visual artwork. The intention for "Broken Strings and Natural Things" is to represent the blending of one form of art into another as life fades and nature runs its course unrestrained The base for the piece was created using an old, naturally fallen tree root system. The vines and flowers are sculpted, by hand, from vinyl records which were also at the end of their musical life. Each of the natural elements were airbrushed with a blend of colors to bring them to life. The cracked flower design on the face of the guitar is all etched by hand as well. The guitar was very generously donated to me by Rob Rabb Productions and has been through many owners and friends. My process in making a piece such as this is to approach it with an idea, but absolutely no expectations of the finished product. This gives me the freedom to create freely and to create from a place of fun and enjoyment. It gives me freedom from mistakes because I don't allow myself to make "mistakes." As an artist, I try to always live by the words of one of my most influential art teachers, who said, "When you make a mistake, make it into a pleasant surprise." I find that more often than not, these "mistakes" turn into the most beautiful, creative parts of my pieces. One of the happiest aspects of being artistic is watching a piece to come together, as I like to say, completely by accident but on purpose.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Musical Sculptures - Sam</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece was created for the Akron Symphony Orchestra's signature annual fundraiser. The project was called "Instruments as Art." Old unusable instruments were donated and then given to artist to turn them in to a piece of artwork to be auctioned off. This piece started as a trombone. It was then transformed in to this piece I call "Sam" due to the name etched in to the bell of the Trombone. The base is sculpted from a mountain laurel and the vines and flowers are made from vinyl records! This piece was the first of many instrument pieces for me and the beginning of something special. The piece is already sold.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wood Sculpture - Elara</image:title>
<image:caption>5 years ago, a good friend of mine gave me some really cool gnarled, somewhat rotted, black walnut logs that fell naturally on his property so I started digging in and found a piece I have named “Elara” hiding inside. Elara is a name inspired by one of Jupiter’s moons, symbolizing the idea of something strong, hidden, and transformative, echoing the power and beauty of a woman who finds grace despite her flaws. There’s something magical, or spiritual or whatever you want to call it, in finding a piece of wood like this and digging in to see what’s hiding underneath. Often times the most weird, gnarled, crazy wood has the most beautiful grain and figure hiding underneath. In most cases this section of the log would just be left to rot, not really usable for anything, but that’s what I love about sculpting wood. Finding the “flaws” and showing how beautiful they can be. With wood sculptures like this, I like to say “Mother Nature does all the hard work and I just help her showcase it to the world.” I think today’s society puts so much pressure on people to try and keep up with beauty standards and fight the natural progression of aging and this piece represents letting go of those constraints and embracing the flaws and cracks that happen over time with life and only seeing the beauty that lies underneath them</image:caption>

<image:title>Wood Sculpture - Kohola</image:title>
<image:caption>I named this piece “Kohola” which is the Hawaiian word for humpback whale, often used to symbolize strength and grace in the ocean. Fitting since the wife and I went on our honeymoon to Hawaii this year. The whale itself if made from black walnut, specifically the same tree that the last piece I posted, and the base is made from a maple burl that was rotted in the center so I cut out all the punky rotten wood and filled the center with @ecopoxy. I wish I had a more meaningful explanation/ story for this piece other than I just really like whales….but I don’t….i just like whales.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece was done as a gift for my girlfriend and manager Julie. We started dating in October of 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, which turns out for us, was a perfect time to start our relationship. That Christmas we cut down a Christmas tree for my house…..a giant Christmas tree…. This was the first time she had ever cut down a tree for Christmas. Since everyone was working from home and on zoom calls all the time she wanted something to go behind her in her office for zoom calls. Little did she know, I kept the trunk of the Christmas tree we cut down together and made this piece for her out of the trunk of that tree so she has a piece of our first Christmas together forever.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Elara</image:title>

      <image:title>Portfolio - "For my love"</image:title>

It’s currently a wall piece hanging in my kitchen.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portfolio - Broken Strings and Natural Things</image:title>

Old unusable instruments were donated and then given to artist to turn them in to a piece of artwork to be auctioned off.
